In the beginning of July 2021, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said that violent crime in her city was on a ‘downward trajectory’. Oh really?! Because according to the Chicago Sun Times and other headlines, just last weekend (July 24-25, 2021), at least 73 people were hit by gunfire and 12 died.

“The city has recorded at least 426 homicides this year, down 1% from 432 homicides last year at this time but up 48 percent from 289 two years ago”. ~ Chicago Sun Times

Over July 4th weekend:

“In the deadliest and most violent weekend this year in Chicago, over 100 people were shot over the long Fourth of July weekend, 19 of them killed. Through July 4, the most recent city data available, 2,019 people have been shot in Chicago this year, an increase of almost 13% over last year and a 58% increase in shootings compared with 2019”. ~ Chicago Sun Times

And last month in June 2021:

“Chicago police released its June crime numbers Thursday morning, showing 499 people were shot last month, and 78 were killed. In total so far in 2021, there have been nearly 1,900 shooting victims, a 13% increase over the first six months of 2020”. ~ ABC7 Chicago News

And since last weekend, there’s been more shootings and fatalities this week. It’s hard to keep up with the numbers and know exactly how many shootings have happened in all of 2021 thus far, but it appears to be more than 2,100 to date. That’s just in 1 city in an entire state, and one state out of the whole country. Let that sink in… 2,100+ shootings in just one city in 2021.
